John Sokoloff

One day I received a letter on YouTube and there was this beautiful video attached to it from a very talented Russian born composer and musician, John Sokoloff. His music touched me so deeply I kept listening to it again and again. It was this video below. Since that time I listened to many other videos by John on YouTube and I found him to be a very pleasant person while corresponding with him. I highly recommend his music to anyone.

Examples of living together happily

I find it very important to talk about our sadness, the things me miss in our new home but at the same time it is also very important to pay attention to our successes, the good things and to celebrate the everything that make us feel good.

There are many good things in being an immigrant. There are people around us who accept us and treat us with love like in the video below between the deer and kitten.

Please share your good immigrant experiences with me and other readers.

Thank you, köszönöm, danke schön, gracias, gracie, salam, salame, hvala, merci,  děkuji, tak, dank je wel, obrigado, dziękuję,

How to be Canadian?

canada eh I was always looking for ways to resolve my     differences with people and my approach of accepting everyone for what they are works fine most times but it doesn’t always work and certainly not with everyone. I recently heard Dr. Lionel Laroche speak about immigrants in Canada, the challenges we face in being here. He put some light on issues I have faced but could not understand before.  I am from Hungary, grew up with a German background and have been living in Canada since 1988. You would think I should be all Canadian and get along with everyone just fine. Unfortunately that is not how it is because I am not all Canadian,  not all German and not all Hungarian. I am a blend of mainly these three and many other cultures, my experiences and the many people who I had contact with in my life so far. Read More…

Africa by Perpetuum Jazzile

This is Africa – originally sung by Toto. This version by Perpetuum Jazzile is fantastic. The sound effects are amazing and it gives a perfect example of what happens when people get together and do something together.

You have to believe

You have to believe
to see the sunshine
beyond the rain.
The values you appreciate is
what will distinguish
you from others.
Love and caring
are true assets
no matter where you live.
They are not loosing value
in recessions and don’t
depend on stock reports.
Hugs and kisses fix most problems
of the mind and heart
and laughter is more important
than money and prestige.
The best moments in your life
are the only ones worth repeating
and the rest are best to let go.
The happiest people are those
who rather regret the mistakes
they made than never have tried at all.
Friends are the gifts like diamonds.
They sparkle in your eyes
and polish you with every touch
but never wear out.

From afar

It hurts me too;
I feel your loneliness
and also mine.
I know what
it feels like chasm
when nobody
talks to you
looks at you
or smiles at you
and you long for
someone to approach you
with tenderness
but nobody takes
the time in this
busy world.

Two nomads

Written by Petőfi Sándor
English translation Teri Petzcreek

The boy is away from home
in the high mountains
he travels alongside a creek
and the creek is at home.

While the boy walks
taking despondent steps
the creek runs fast
off the mountain rocks.

The young boys’
lips are quiet
the escaping flow
sings happy songs.

Gifts from home

Written by Váthy Kálmán
English translation Teri Petz
hillside

Please bring me a speck of dust
from the hillsides of home
and one drop of the flavorful wine
from the mighty lake Balaton.

Please bring me the tangy taste
of roasting chestnuts in your hair
and the rusty golden sight
of a falling leaf at home.

In your eyes please bring me
some of the blue in the sky
and in your fingers a message
from the bark of the oaks.

All for one

I have heard this story many times but actually seeing it on video has touched me more than words can say.  I consider it to be the ultimate example of love, teamwork, compassion and care.  I realized how little it takes to help someone, yet how much it can mean in times of despair.

The Husky and the Polar Bear

My sister-in-law sent me an E-mail with pictures of a polar bear and a Husky that touched me so much I wanted to find a way of posting it here.  When I entered the photographer, Norbert Rosing’s name who has taken the pictures I was thrilled to find this video on YouTube. I think it relates to immigration and to relating. Enjoy!

I would love to hear from you! Feel free to comment on it in the comment box below the post.

Immigrant life

Being an immigrant is like dancing on a double edged sword; having many exciting opportunities and also feeling like and outsider and at times isolated. Like a transplanted tree, ripped out of its environment and being placed in some strange land. Read More…

The homesick

eagle flying I feel cold when
I don’t feel love
in my heart.
I am shivering
when loneliness
like an iceberg
is sitting next to me.
My heart is sobbing
when I think of
my home far away.
I open my heart
and fly home
on the wings
of my dreams.

Soul sight

Don’t look at the color of my skin;
don’t look at where I came from
or the clothes I wear.
Look at me with your eyes closed
